Head down to the city centre and admire the art deco architecture and beachfront. Check out the shops, art galleries and cafes, restaurants and bars. Call in at the Art Deco Trust to sign up for a tour or pick up a DIY guide and don't miss the MTG across the street which has an excellent 1931 Earthquake exhibition plus Taonga Maori and 20th Century fine arts and painting collections. Walk along the seafront from Ocean Spa to the National Aquarium of New Zealand with 1500 fish, birds and animals to view. Along the way, enjoy the oceanfront viewing platform, the Art Deco sound shell, sunken gardens and more.
Next door to the House of Pania is a Napier must-see, the Bluff Hill Lookout with port and big sea views of Hawke's Bay. From there take a walking track down through Sturm's Gully to the funky seaside village of Ahuriri where you will find a marina, fishing boats, small swimming beaches, cafes, restaurants, shops, and a tiny cinema with big comfy leather seats serving pizza, wine and coffee.
